Why do sexually transmitted diseases affect women more than men?

STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are now a very common illness in women. Women of almost all ages, including young women, are impacted by this. Understanding the causes of STDs and the preventative measures available to women is crucial. Although STDs affect both men and women equally, women are biologically more susceptible to them. Because they are often asymptomatic and left untreated, STDs in women must be detected as soon as possible. HIV transmission is more likely when STDs are left untreated.

STD Fact Check

Reproductive tract infections, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases are reported to affect 6% of adult Indians.

What is STD

The majority of sexual contact between two people is the main cause of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Sexual activity increases the risk of getting an STD or UTI. Blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and other bodily fluids like sweat and saliva are the primary routes by which bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause STDs or STIs spread from one person to another. Occasionally, it is also transferred from mothers to their unborn children. The majority of the time, the infection spreads between people through blood transfusion, shared needles or syringes, shaving blades, etc.

Why STDs are on a rise in Women

The prevalence of STDs in women, particularly among the younger generation in India and around the world, including cases of HIV, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhoea, and syphilis, has many causes. Let's go over each of the main causes individually:

Casual and unprotected sex

  1. Mistaken self belief that these diseases are now less threatening
  2. Vagina is more exposed and vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases
  3. Most women do not feel comfortable (or able) to insist on condom use
  4. Birth control methods other than condoms are also adding to the rise of STDs
  5. 5.    Symptoms of STDs in women

Even though STDs are a common problem in women, not all of the affected women exhibit the same symptoms, and some STIs are also asymptomatic. Even if the person experiences some symptoms, they could be mistaken for other health conditions like a yeast infection or urinary tract infection.

·   Unusual white discharge from vagina with bad odor

·  Abnormal vaginal bleeding

·  Burning or itching sensation in the vagina

·  Painful sex

· Bumps on and around vagina

· Pelvic pain

Treatment for STDs and UTIs is crucial because delaying care can result in a number of other conditions and complications. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, call your gynaecologists right away. Timely diagnosis and treatment by expert gynaecologists will prevent various other health issues including the condition of infertility.
